Washboard Road

Eileen made this bright and cheerful quilt for a special nephew.  The pattern is called Washboard Road by Highway 10 Designs and is available in both a PDF instant download or paper version from www.highway10designs.com

We used the Soho pantograph that compliments the texture in the Twist by Dashwood Studio fabric collection.

Hockey Jersey Quilt

When Cathy asked me if I would be able to quilt a quilt made of hockey jerseys, I didn't really know the answer.  I hadn't tried anything like this, but my Innova is an industrial machine with a 1 HP motor, so I was willing to give it a try.  Cathy brought me some scraps from the jerseys and crests and name badges that didn't make it into the quilt. I tested it out and it went smoothly so I was happy to tackle the quilt.

These jerseys all belonged to Cathy's grandson so this quilt is filled with special memories.  There is every variation of crest, embroidery, vinyl letters etc on the different blocks.  I did stitch a bit slower than normal but other than that it was pretty much business as usual.

The Windswept pantograph was the choice and we used a blue grey thread.  I love how the texture comes out on the Cuddletex backing.  With the jerseys, batting and plush backing this is one heavy quilt for its size!

Truly a labour of love by Cathy for her grandson.

Bright and Modern

Elaine made this bright and modern quilt that just feels happy.  She didn't use a commercial pattern but did some math and found a fun way to use her fabrics on both the front and the back!

She selected the Gingersnap pantograph and a white thread.

Just Takes Two - 100 Block Quilt

Leslie brought this amazing sampler quilt for some custom quilting.  The pattern was a mystery from Sentimental Stitches back in 2012 called “Just Takes 2”.  I have the same quilt top pieced but unquilted as yet.  Mine has a white background and be a variety of bright colours so it hardly seems like the same pattern at all!  Twice a month we received a minimum of two block patterns.  The pattern is now available for purchase as a complete single pattern.

Leslie left the quilting designs up to me.  We talked a bit when she dropped it off, but it was a bit daunting to be honest.  Once I loaded it, I kind of just went block by block trying to keep a light hand with the quilting.

I’m including a mountain of pictures so you can appreciate the wide variety of blocks, fabrics and quilting motifs.

All the quilting is hand guided- a mix of rulers and free motion.  I may have to dig my quilt out and get it finished.  I was quite pleased with the final results here.

Folksy appliqué

Leslie brought this cozy quilt with a mix of pieced blocks and appliqué .  We opted for an edge to edge design, which sometimes is the best choice, even over applique which might come as a surprise to some.

We used the Fanciful Fliers pantograph and one of my favorite threads to blend with both reds and greens in a quilt - So Fine #489 Lewis and Clark.  This is a budget friendly option that recedes into the background and lets the fabric and appliqué be the star.

There is never one right way to quilt a quilt, so consider all the options and see what feels right for you.  (I wasn’t struck down by lightning for stitching over the appliqué!)

Celtic Solstice

Leslie brought this amazing quilt that has so many pieces! The pattern is called Celtic Solstice from Quitville's Bonnie Hunter.

Leslie chose the Knit 1 Purl 2 pantograph which has nice movement and it dense enough to catch all pieces with a quilting stitch.

Leslie opted for one of the Northcott wide backs that I keep on hand.  The colours in the Stonehenge back work really well with the front.
