My Halloween Butter Tarts

I am so happy that I was able to to finish this Halloween quilt before the big day!    I had a Fat Quarter bundle of the Spooky n Sweeter Collection from Art Gallery Fabrics waiting for the right project for a couple of years.  Trying to come up with an interesting way to use them was actually how the Butter Tarts pattern for Highway 10 Designs came to be.

I knew I really wanted a pattern that used the Fat Quarters efficiently and didn't require a background.  The collection contained 17 fat quarters and I added 3 more from my stash to bring it up to the 20 fabrics that with a border makes a lovely lap quilt.  Thankfully I had the good sense to tuck away some coordinating yardage somewhere along the way! One of the fun parts of the Butter Tarts pattern is mixing and matching all the fabrics to create the blocks. 

I used a mystery wool batting that I purchased over the summer at a clearance sale.  It didn't have a manufacturer's name, just that it was wool.  It gave the quilting great definition, and was very cozy when I was under the quilt watching TV last night.

I was eager to lead this one on the machine so I used a solid black fabric that I had on hand for the backing, along with a strip of the leftover border fabric for interest.  I used the Gossamer pantograph, and So Fine #502 Milan Mauve on the top top and Bottom Line #632 Light Periwinkle on the back. This turned my plain black fabric into something a lot more interesting.

I pieced this quilt top at a retreat with the Sunset Country Quilters in Dryden this past weekend.  I had my fabric cut before I arrived and could enjoy visiting and piecing this one.  No HSTs to trim or flying geese to make, made for a very relaxing project.
