Not Your Mother's Rail Fence - Curling edition

Denise made this lap sized version of the Highway 10 Designs "Not Your Mother's Rail Fence" pattern.  Her selection of curling and maple leaf fabrics are perfect for the season of curling up on the couch to watch all the games on TV!  Denise selected the Maple Syrup pantograph to continue the theme.

 

Not Your Mother's Rail Fence is a beginner friendly pattern as comes together quickly with no stress.  Pattern is available in paper and PDF format on the Highway 10 Designs website.

 

Cindy's Not Your Mother's Rail Fence 3.0

Cindy sent me this crisp Not Your Mother's Rail Fence quilt.  I never get tired of quilting a pattern that is part of the Highway 10 Designs collection.  I know that Cindy enjoys making this pattern as I have quilt two for her in the past.  Check them out here and here.

Cindy thought she was probably going to donate this quilt so she left the panto and thread choice up to me.   I decided to "go for it" with the thread color and picked a bright blue-green that popped on the solids.  The panto is called "Dazzle" and is a nice gender/age neutral design  that will be suitable for whoever the final recipient may be.

Reed's Not Your Mother's Rail Fence

 

I am very excited to finally be able to share a quilt that I made for someone special!  This past weekend we celebrated with my oldest daughter Kyla's boyfriend Reed as he received his Bachelor of Music from Brandon University.

I knew that I wanted to make Reed a quilt for the occasion and I really wanted to make one of our Highway 10 Designs patterns.  Not Your Mother's Rail Fence is very versatile and makes a nice manly quilt, so it was one of my leading choices.

Reed has recently developed a bit of a fishing obsession, so when I saw the fish batik at Flare fabrics, I thought I might be onto something.  I passed my idea by my daughter and she loved it. Over Christmas holidays, she took a road trip with me to pick out the other three batiks from Kick Ass Country Store in Plumas, Manitoba.   The unique gold metallic inner border fabric came from my stash and gives a fun nod to his Music Degree.  The fish and music fabric are a bit of an odd combination but perfect for this recipient!

The whole family had a hand in the construction of the quilt when we were together over the Easter Weekend.  Kyla had the pedal to the metal on the sewing machine, I cut and organized, and Kendra and Nolan traded shifts at the ironing board.  Apparently they have all picked up some skills living in my quilty world!

We opted for the Bora Bora pantograph which makes me feel the wind on the lake. 

I opted to use a Pigma pen right on the backing fabric to label this quilt.  (I hope it lasts for more than a few washings.)

This is the Queen Size version of the pattern on a double bed.  Its a bit generous in size, but it should be with him when he upsizes his bed in the future.

Eileen's Not Your Mother's Rail Fence

I recently had the pleasure of quilting Eileen's version of our Highway 10 Designs pattern "Not Your Mother's Rail Fence".  I never tire of quilting one of our designs!

Eileen was able to pull all of the fabrics for this quilt from her stash.  The yardage amounts that she had helped to dictate the color placement in the pattern.

We decided on the Dusty Miller panto (which is one I seem to rarely use) that just seemed to suit this quilt perfectly.  Eileen also selected my navy wide Stonehenge backing fabric.

Cindy's "Not Your Mother's Rail Fence" - 2.0

The stunning version of our Highway 10 Designs "Not You Mother's Rail Fence" pattern was made by Cindy.  The mix of rich and bright batiks really is breathtaking.

Cindy chose the paisley panto, Quilter's Dream Blend batting, and a shiny turquoise Magnifico thread.

Cindy also used some of my wide Stonehenge backing fabric.  It is a navy and brown combination that really adds to the richness of the quilt.

So tricky to get pictures in the wind!  Cindy, I loved your version of this pattern.  I can always tell when I've got a special one and all my family members stop to comment on it.  When you can stop a teenage girl in midstory to comment "wow, nice quilt" you know you did something special!   I really enjoyed having it in my house for awhile.

I am also excited to show my second completed row in the mystery leaf row quilt I am participating in.  This time the leaves were fused on and I did a machine blanket stitch around them.  

Here are rows one and two together.  I am loving this one.  I can't wait for next week to see what's next!

Cindy's - Not Your Mother's Rail Fence

This is Cindy's version of our Highway 10 Designs "Not Your Mother's Rail Fence" pattern.  It was very exciting to be able to quilt such a fun rendition of our pattern, and in batiks to boot!

When I saw the backing fabric that Cindy sent I thought she might be up for having a little fun with the choice of panto and thread for this one.  We both loved the "Fossil" panto.  I choose a fairly bold purple Magnifico thread which has a really nice sheen.  I always love how it looks on bold batiks.

And one more because I just love it so much!

Not Your Mother's Rail Fence #2

Here is a look at a "Not Your Mother's Rail Fence" quilt that I just completed for Fabriculous - a great (semi) local quilt store. Wendy at Fabriculous has just expanded her offerings to include more batiks (yeah!) and we thought this Highway 10 Designs pattern would be the perfect way to celebrate them.

The quilt is batik front and back.  I used a shiny plum Magnifico thread on the top, and a new panto called "Tickle Too".  I think it is going to become a fast favorite!

 As I was out photographing this quilt I noticed the rabbit highway in our back yard going from our RV to the garden.

Not Your Mother's Rail Fence

It is always an exciting day when I get to reveal something new.  I am thrilled to show you the latest pattern from Highway 10 Designs - Not Your Mother's Rail Fence Quilt.

This quilt is a little twist on a traditional pattern.  Rail Fence quilts have always been popular because they come together easily and they just look good.  We have varied the strip widths to give it a fresh look.

This idea has been brewing for a while now.  Kathy made the pattern in a much softer colorway.  You can see more of it on her blog.

This lovely bundle of batiks that I had purchased during a Craftsy sale seemed like a perfect fit to give it a totally different look so off came that pretty ribbon!

This pattern is definitely beginner friendly so I enlisted some help piecing the top.  I cut, Kyla sewed the strips and Kendra was responsible for pressing.  Everyone got their favorite task, so we had a lot of fun, and it came together really quickly.

It is amazing how much you can accomplish via email.  Even though Kathy and I live more than 500 km apart, Highway 10 Designs is truly a joint effort at every step along the way.  Here is one of the photos she received when we were deciding what color I should dye the backing.

The darker purple it was.  I tried out a new pantograph called "Joust" on this one.  It has nice even coverage so I'm sure I will use it a lot.

Last week Dauphin was not looking like the winter wonderland it is today so the quilt took a little trip north for Kathy to bind and photograph.   Her photos are stunning just as I expected and I am happy to report that she is still speaking to me even though I sent her batik binding and a very dense hand dyed cotton sheeting for the back!  I knew she was tough enough to handle it ;).
