Foxes and Bunnies in Bed

Reneta is a new grandma to twins and she had to make them each a special quilt.  The quilts are part of of a three in one pattern from Sew Fresh Quilts called "Bears, Foxes and Bunnies in Bed."  Reneta and I don't often get to shop together in person since we no longer live in the same area, but when she was visiting me, we went to see Jennifer at Needle Craft and Studio in Beausejour to pick fabric for these quilts.

Reneta immediately fell in love with the rainbow print and Jennifer helped Reneta pull complimentary fabrics for the bunnies.

I had fun doing a little custom quilting.  I outlined the features on the bunny faces and added a daisy meander to the background.

For the quilting on the blanket part, I followed the shapes of the rainbows freehand.

Could this be any cuter?

I tried to keep the quilting on the fox quilt similar but different.  I added a basic meander behind the fox faces.

The foxes needed a little more quilting that just the outlining so I added a couple of strategically placed curved lines.

I added quilting in the blanket part to every gold line of the print.  

Stellar Mosaic

This fabulous quilt was made by Cindy.  The pattern is called Stellar Mosaic by Cotton and Joy and the kit was curated for Cindy by Jennifer at Needle Crafts and Studio in Beausejour, Manitoba.  Sometimes when a quilt arrives in my studio it tells me that it would be extra special with some custom quilting.  This was one of those quilts.  Cindy told me to surprise her.  After thinking about things for a while I sent Cindy some doodles and she told me to go for it.

The first area that I came up with a plan for was the black background.  I used a handful of rulers to add the lotus shapes.  Some loops in the peach squares added a fun motif.

The focus fabric squares were filled with some simple curves.

And the most fun part was the floral motif that I quilted in the white stars.

Cindy provided this great pink Fireside backing and it shows off the quilting so well.  I love the designs that emerged on the back.

Cindy's Wonderful Woodland

 

Cindy made this fabulous Wonderful Woodland quilt as a gift for a baby that will be arriving soon to friends in Japan.  What a perfect choice to send a little bit of Canada over to a new baby from its "Canadian Grandma".

I did my freehand woodgrain quilting pattern as I love the texture it adds and I like to plan my stitchhing path to avoid stitching through any cute little eyeballs!

Cindy chose a lovely grey fireside for the backing and this is a super sweet and cuddly quilt.

I also had the opportunity to quilt up this stunning digitally printed panel for Marion.  The panel is called "Winter's Wings" and is from Hoffman fabrics.  Marion wanted some simple but denser quilting for this one and she chose the Soho pantograph.

Dinorama T-rex on Roller Skates

I had so much fun adding a little custom quilting to Cindy's Dinorama quilt.  The pattern is fun design from Art Eat Quilting Co.

Cindy and I couldn't find a pantograph that we really liked so Cindy gave me the go ahead for some custom quilting.  I can honestly say I haven't quilted reptile skin before!

I stitched in the ditch around the dinosaurs and the features like their eyes and teeth. 

The topographical freehand pattern seemed like the perfect idea for the linen background.

 

Bold and Beautiful

 

I had the privilege of quilting this beauty for Barb.  The top was pieced by Anne Reimer, who sadly has passed away, and Anne's friends and family are working to get her quilt treasures complete.

 

All of the colouful fabrics in the quilt's body and the applique border are hand dyes that Anne did herself.

The top really didn't need me to do anything to make it beautiful, so Barb and I opted for the "less is more" approach.  Barb selected the Raindrops pantograph for the body of the quilt. 

For the outer border I stitched around the applique and added a simple piano key border.  To determine the spacing of the piano keys, I looked to the piecing in the body of the quilt.  All of the quilting was done in a slightly off black thread.

Leaf Me Alone to Quilt

This stunning quilt was made by the very talented Cindy.  The pattern is called "Leaf Me Alone to Quilt" by Joan's Own Creations.  Cindy put a lot of work into this top between the applique, satin stitching and piecing in the border alone!   Enjoy some photos of this beauty....

I chose a few different background fills to compliment the leaves in the blocks.  I decided to leave the block frames and the leaf shapes in the border unquilted, and help them pop by filling the brown background with pebbles.  100 weight thread was the order of the day!

This oak leaf trio was my favorite.

I used crosshatching, stippling, curls and swirly wind for the backgrounds. 

We used one of my Stonehenge wide fabrics on the back, and I have to say I enjoyed seeing the quilting on the back.

Reneta's Pumpkin Quilt

It has been quite a while since I posted to my blog which is evidenced by the lack of snow in these photos!   

Reneta brought me this fun pumpkin quilt.  When I asked Reneta what she had in mind for the quilting, she said she kept thinking about Cinderella when she was putting it together.  She suggested that maybe he needed to have a glass slipper and maybe some mice hidden in it somewhere.  And some magical swirls of course!  Challenge accepted!

I am very happy with how the hidden surprises turned out.  I am not computerized so I always look for a reference online that can guide me as I chalk the design on to the quilt.

The swirly background filled all the odd shapes nicely, and simple quilting in the pumpkins and leaves was all that was required.  The background is a linen fabric and this is the first quilt with linen that I have had the opportunity to work on.

The Fireside fabric on the back shows off the quilting nicely.
