Liane & Shannon

This post is all in the family.  Lianne and her daughter Shannon brought some lovely quilts this summer.  Lianne made the first two quilts for her brother and sister-in-law.   Lianne used the Easy Street pattern from the Fabric Cafe for this woodsy one.  

Liane chose the Terrace pantograph and added a lovely backing with fall leaves.

This pretty quilt was again a pattern from the Fabric Cafe called Rail Fence.

Liane chose the London Fog pantograph which added some nice movement.

Shannon made this fun beachy/camping quilt.  The Bora Bora pantograph added a perfect sea breeze to finish it off.

Cedarcrest Falls

Julie made the lovely quilt using the Cedarcrest Falls panel form Northcott.  She used the Morning Spring pattern from Villa Rosa Designs and added extra blocks to use up the fabric she had and made the quilt a little bigger.

Julie was looking for flannel for the back of the quilt but didn't find what she was looking for, so I suggested she give Cuddletex or Fireside a try.   Mama Bear's Quilt Shoppe  pretty much carries the rainbow of Cuddletex colors and this teal was the prefect compliment.  

There are a few great thing about Cuddletex.  First it comes in 70" or 90" widths.  (Fireside is 60" or 80")  So it doesn't require piecing for a backing as often. It is produced by Siltex Mills whose Head Office is located right here in Winnipeg, Manitoba!

Julie selected the Bora Bora pantograph which looks great on a variety of different quilts, including many panels.

Aurora Borealis

Marion made this striking quilt for her grandson.  The fabric is a collection from Northcott called Aurora Borealis.

Originally Marion thought that she might prefer custom quilting to highlight some of the motifs in the panel.  We discussed the pros and cons and other options.   When looking at different pantogrpahs, Marion turned the Bora Bora pantograph from its usual horizontal orientation to a vertical one that echoed the designs in the panel and it was the perfect idea!

The quilting shows up amazingly well on the Cuddle backing. We used a shiny purple thread on the front and a mint green thread on the back.

Dignity Quilt

This stunning quilt was brought to me by Susan. This quilt will be used as a Dignity quilt at a local care home that her church supports. What is a Dignity quilt?  The purpose of a Dignity quilt is to be used at the care home when someone dies, and there is a public exit from the building in front of other residents and staff.  Instead of seeing a body bag, the stretcher is covered with the quilt.  For the design of this quilt, Susan was inspired by a quilt that was made by the Crocus Quilters in Dauphin, MB that I used to belong to.  You can read all about that quilt and the inspiration behind it here.

Susan opted for the Bora Bora pantograph, which reminds me of wind blowing across the landscape - a perfect choice!

This quilt was made entirely out of batiks, and all the different patterns and textures just add depth to the quilt.  I think the final product is absolutely gorgeous.

 

Hunter Star

 

Anne brought this bold Hunter Star quilt.    She chose the Bora Bora pantograph, which offers a nice density of quilting and lets all her beautiful piecing shine.

I like the detail at the corners and the variation in the background fabrics throughout the quilt.

Pick Up Sticks

Christine brought lovely lap quilt that she made for a friend.  The pattern is called Pick Up Sticks by Phoebe Moon Designs.

Christine chose the Bora Bora pantograph and it shows up fabulously on the Fireside backing.

 

Prairie Meadow

This beautiful quilt was made by Marlene.  The pattern is Prairie Meadow by Lori Holt of Bee in My Bonnet.

All of the blocks are hand appliqued, and as always Marlene's work is just amazing.  Marlene had a vision for how she wanted this one quilted - with an edge to edge design!  Normally my heart would break at the thought of stitching across someone's beautiful hand applique, and I'm sure I asked Marlene if she was sure multiple times, but I do believe there is always more than one way to quilt a quilt.

I have to say Marlene's vision was the right thing.  The Bora Bora pantograph hold things together and doesn't detract from the top that has so much to look at.  We used a very pale green thread that is visible across the top.

The edge to edge design is a much more economical choice and allowed Marlene to add a cozy fireside backing to the quilt.  (Fireside can be a little thick for me to do a lot of ruler work successfully).

Does seeing this quilt change you mind about stitching over applique in certain circumstances?  It certainly opened my eyes!

 

Bear Chase

This beauty made entirely of batiks was made by Margaret.  The pattern is called Bear Chase by Glad Creations.

Margaret made this quilt for her daughter.  She chose the flowing Bora Bora pantograph which adds some softness to the top.

The backing fabric that Margaret provided is a Stonehenge Gradations wide back from Northcott.  It really added something special to the back of this quilt.

Scrappy Mountain Majesties

Sydney brought this wonderful Scrappy Mountain Majesties quilt for some finishing. Bonnie Hunter offers a free tutorial here.  The limited palette of greens and creams makes for a very relaxing quilt.

Sydney chose the Bora Bora pantograph which is a great design on so many different quilts.
