Val's Twist on Simply Dashing

This is Val's unique interpretation of our Highway 10 Designs Simply Dashing pattern.  The pattern is written as a two fabric quilt that utilizes strip piecing for a fast and easy finish.

  Val made it her own by starting with some ombre fat quarters and doing a whole lot of organizing and planning along the way.  It is great to see quilters take your pattern and run with their own vision.

Val chose the Gingersnap pantograph and a vibrant orange thread to add to the fun and match her backing.

 

A Trio of Jelly Roll Quilts

Roberta made this trio of Jelly Roll Race quilts for her grandchildren.  I think she did a great job of making them equal but unique.

The first batik version with a purple Fireside backing was given the Fascination pantograph.

The second quilt featuring the Ruby Star Society Hole Punch Dots collection received the Flirtatious pantograph.  The fabric makes me think of confetti and the pantograph streamers so let the party begin!

And last but not least this batik version received the Gingersnap pantograph which seems to be the most popular in my collection.

Building Blocks

Donna brought this cheerful quilt.  The pattern is called Building Blocks from Missouri Star quilt company and she used a Kaffe Fassett Layer Cake in the Equator colorway.

Donna selected the Fanciful Fliers pantograph and a bright pink Magnifico thread.

I just love how the quilting shows up on the fun orange Fireside backing.

 

Scrap Crazy

Glen and Angela made this pretty quilt for their granddaughter.  She helped pick the fabrics that were going to be included, but she will be surprised with the final product.

Glen and Angela decided on the Pieces of my Heart pantograph which adds a pretty flowing design.

The backing is a soft blue, that began its life as a flat sheet.  Angela always removes the hems and gives the sheet a good wash and press before she brings it to me.  Some longarmers don't like to use sheets, but when they are a good quality and have been washed, I haven't encountered any issues.

 

Cabin Nights

 Marlene brought this quilt made in a delightful neutral palette.  The pattern is from  a Manitoba designer - Prairie Quilt Co. and is called Cabin Nights.

Marlene selected the Yo-Yo pantograph which adds a nice even texture across the top.

The cozy fireside backing looks so inviting and shows off the quilting wonderfully.

Flea Market Flowers

My pictures do not do this beautiful quilt justice.  Marlene hand appliqued this Flea Market Flowers quilt.  The pattern is from Lori Holt of Bee in My Bonnet.

This is the second hand appliqued quilt that Marlene requested an edge to edge finish on.  She chose the Windswept pantograph that adds a simple finish.  I wasn't sure how I would feel about an edge to edge pattern over hand applique but I was really pleased with the end result.

This last photo is more true to the actual colours of the quilt in person.

 

Prairie Meadow

This beautiful quilt was made by Marlene.  The pattern is Prairie Meadow by Lori Holt of Bee in My Bonnet.

All of the blocks are hand appliqued, and as always Marlene's work is just amazing.  Marlene had a vision for how she wanted this one quilted - with an edge to edge design!  Normally my heart would break at the thought of stitching across someone's beautiful hand applique, and I'm sure I asked Marlene if she was sure multiple times, but I do believe there is always more than one way to quilt a quilt.

I have to say Marlene's vision was the right thing.  The Bora Bora pantograph hold things together and doesn't detract from the top that has so much to look at.  We used a very pale green thread that is visible across the top.

The edge to edge design is a much more economical choice and allowed Marlene to add a cozy fireside backing to the quilt.  (Fireside can be a little thick for me to do a lot of ruler work successfully).

Does seeing this quilt change you mind about stitching over applique in certain circumstances?  It certainly opened my eyes!

 

Turning Leaves

Sydney brought this wonderful batik Turning Leaves quilt for some custom quilting.  The pattern was originally published in a 2002 Quiltmaker magazine but now is available as a download on the Quilting Daily website

I have seen this pattern done with machine applique in the past but Sydney decided to hand applique her blocks.  I used a thin Microquilter thread to stitch in the ditch around the leaves.  I was able to quilt the rest of the quilt with one blendy color of So Fine thread.

Veins in the leaves, some accent stitching in the block corners, loops in the sashing and an echo curve border were our design choices.

I love how the quilting shows on the back as well.
